Lake Malawi is located in the great rift basin in east central Africa.  At 31,000 km2, it is the tenth largest freshwater lake in the world.  The maximum depth is 700 m, pH 7.8-8.5, and the surface temperature averages 23-28 C.  The cichlid fauna of the lake numbers near 600 mostly endemic species.
